This du’a is quoted by Imam Ghazali (rahimahullah) – without any chain – as that of Sayyiduna Abu Bakr (radiyallahu’anhu) with the following words:

اللهم أرني الحق حقاً وارزقني اتباعه ، وأرني الباطل باطلا وارزقني اجتنابهAllahumma ariniyal haqqa haqqan warzuqniyat tiba’ah, wa ariniyal batila batilaw warzuqniyaj tinabah(See Sharhul Ihya, vol. 10 pg. 106)

Hafiz Ibn Kathir (rahimahullah) has referred to this du’a as a ‘reported du’a’ (الدعاء المأثور) with the following words:

اللهم أرنا الحق حقاً وارزقنا اتباعه ، وأرنا الباطل باطلا وارزقنا اجتنابه، ولا تجعله ملتبسا علينا فنضل ، واجعلنا للمتقين إماما.

The dua Allahumma Arinal Haqqa Haqqan” is not authentically attributed to the Prophet Muhammad (peace be upon him). Some sources suggest it was mentioned by Imam Ghazali without a verified chain of narration, and although it is sometimes attributed to Sayyidna Abu Bakr and Sayyiduna Umar (may Allah be pleased with them), there is no authentic chain for it.

Muslims are encouraged to make personal supplications for forgiveness, guidance, and strength in their own words and languages, as long as these align with the teachings of the Quran and Sunnah. Scholars agree that general supplications do not need to be explicitly mentioned in the Sunnah, and the wording of this dua is considered permissible.

When to Say:

You can recite this dua whenever seeking clarity in decision-making or during times of moral confusion. It is particularly useful during times of great trials or fitnah, when distinguishing between right and wrong becomes challenging.
