اللَّهُمَّ إنِّي أسْتَخِيرُكَ بعِلْمِكَ، وأَسْتَقْدِرُكَ بقُدْرَتِكَ، وأَسْأَلُكَ مِن فَضْلِكَ العَظِيمِ؛ فإنَّكَ تَقْدِرُ ولَا أقْدِرُ، وتَعْلَمُ ولَا أعْلَمُ، وأَنْتَ عَلَّامُ الغُيُوبِ، اللَّهُمَّ إنْ كُنْتَ تَعْلَمُ أنَّ هذا الأمْرَ خَيْرٌ لي في دِينِي ومعاشِي وعَاقِبَةِ أمْرِي – أوْ قالَ: عَاجِلِ أمْرِي وآجِلِهِ – فَاقْدُرْهُ لي ويَسِّرْهُ لِي، ثُمَّ بَارِكْ لي فِيهِ، وإنْ كُنْتَ تَعْلَمُ أنَّ هذا الأمْرَ شَرٌّ لي في دِينِي ومعاشِي وعَاقِبَةِ أمْرِي – أوْ قالَ: في عَاجِلِ أمْرِي وآجِلِهِ – فَاصْرِفْهُ عَنِّي واصْرِفْنِي عنْه، واقْدُرْ لي الخَيْرَ حَيْثُ كَانَ، ثُمَّ أرْضِنِي.“O Allah, I seek Your counsel through Your knowledge and I seek Your assistance through Your might and I ask You of Your immense favour, for indeed You alone decree fate while I do not, and You (alone) know (all things) while I do not, and You alone possess all knowledge of the Unseen. O Allah, if You know that this matter (mention your concern) is good for me concerning my religion, my life, and the final outcomes of my affairs, then decree it for me, make it easy for me, and bless me in it. But if You know this matter to be harmful to me in my religion, my life, and the outcomes of my affairs, then turn it away from me and turn me away from it, and decree for me what is good, wherever it may be, and make me content with it.”Allahumma innee astakheeruka bi ilmika wa-astaqdiruka bi qudratika wa-as’aluka min fadhlika al-adheem. Fa innaka taqdiru walaa aqdiru. Wa ta’lamu walaa a’alamu wa anta allaamul ghuyoob. Sahih al-Bukhari 1166

Narrated by Jabir bin Abdullah: The Prophet (peace be upon him) used to teach us the way of doing Istikhara in all matters as he taught us the Suras of the Qur’an. He said, “If anyone of you thinks of doing any job, he should offer two Rakah prayer other than the compulsory ones and then say the Istikhara Dua…”

When to Pray Istikhara

  • Istikhara can be prayed at any time, except during the prohibited times for prayer (e.g., immediately after Fajr or Asr).
  • Note: It is not necessary to wait for a dream or a sign. Trust in Allah’s guidance, which will manifest as ease or difficulty in the matter as events unfold.

Steps for Performing Salat al-Istikhara

  • Recite the Istikhara Dua: After completing the prayer, supplicate with the Istikhara Dua. Mention your concern in the relevant part of the Dua.
  • Make an Intention: Have a sincere intention to seek Allah’s guidance for a specific matter.
  • Perform Two Rak’ahs (Units) of Prayer: Offer a voluntary (Nafl) prayer without any specific Surahs required.

Tips for Effective Istikhara

  • Sincerity: Approach Istikhara with a pure heart, seeking guidance from Allah without personal biases.
  • Patience: The answer may come gradually, so patience is key.
  • Consistency: If you don’t receive clarity after one Istikhara, you can repeat it for further guidance.
  • Consultation: Seek advice from knowledgeable and trustworthy individuals to complement Istikhara.
  • Reflection: Reflect on your feelings after performing Istikhara. A sense of peace often indicates the right decision, while anxiety may suggest otherwise.

Istikhara in Daily Life

  • Career Choices: Istikhara helps in making confident decisions about career paths or job offers.
  • Marriage: It provides guidance in choosing the right spouse, ensuring a strong foundation for marriage.
  • Major Life Decisions: Whether it’s relocating, making financial investments, or other significant choices, Istikhara helps align decisions with your faith and well-being.

Common Misconceptions About Istikhara

  1. Dreams: It is a misconception that Istikhara will always result in a clear dream or specific signs. The Prophet’s Sunnah does not support this idea.
  2. Immediate Results: The answer from Istikhara may not be immediate. Patience is essential, and repeating Istikhara is allowed if needed.
  3. Delegating Istikhara: Istikhara is a personal prayer and cannot be delegated to someone else. It must be performed by the individual making the decision.
