Timeless Lessons from the Life of Prophet Nuh (AS)

The life of Prophet Nuh (AS) is a powerful story that teaches important lessons about patience, faith, and obeying Allah. As one of the first and most respected prophets in Islam, Prophet Nuh (AS) worked hard to guide his people to worship the one true God.

Even though many people rejected him and made fun of him, Prophet Nuh’s story shows how he never gave up on his mission. His patience and strong faith in Allah, despite all the challenges, teach us how to stay committed and trust in Allah, no matter what difficulties we face.

Prophet Nuh’s Story and the Life of Prophet Nuh (AS)

Prophet Nuh (AS) was born into a society where idol worship was widespread. Shaytan (Satan) had deceived the people after the death of some righteous individuals, convincing them to create statues in their memory. Over time, these statues were worshipped as gods.

Allah choose Nuh (AS) to call the people back to the worship of one true God—Allah. His mission lasted for 950 years, during which he constantly preached to his people to abandon idol worship and return to monotheism. He warned them of the severe punishment awaiting if they didn’t repent. Despite his tireless efforts, only a small number of people accepted his message, while most rejected and ridiculed him.

“We sent Nuh to his people, and he stayed with them a thousand years, minus fifty.”

(Qur’an 29:14)

The Message of Prophet Nuh (AS)

Nuh (AS) urged his people to worship only Allah, warning them of the consequences of their disobedience. He said:

“O my people! Worship Allah. You have no deity other than Him. I truly fear for you the torment of a tremendous Day.”

(Qur’an 7:59)

Despite this clear message, the people continued to mock Nuh (AS) and refused to believe in him. They argued that he was just an ordinary man and demanded that he bring visible proof of his message.

His Family

Prophet Nuh (AS)had a wife and children, but not all of them believed in his message. One of his sons rejected the call to follow Allah and, despite Nuh’s pleas, chose to stay with the disbelievers. His son drowned in the great flood sent as a punishment for those who disbelieved.

Nuh’s wife is also mentioned in the Qur’an as one who did not support her husband’s mission. She too was among the disbelievers who perished in the flood, showing that faith and obedience to Allah, not family ties, are the keys to salvation.

“And Allah presents an example of those who disbelieved: the wife of Nuh and the wife of Lut. They were under two of Our righteous servants but betrayed them, so they [the prophets] could not protect them from Allah.”

(Qur’an 66:10)

Lessons from the Great Flood in Prophet Nuh’s Story.

Allah commanded Nuh (AS) to build a large ark because a massive flood was coming to punish the disbelievers. While he was building the ark on dry land, people mocked him for building a boat far from any water. However, Nuh continued to warn them about the flood, but they refused to believe him.

After the ark was completed, Allah instructed Nuh to gather his followers and pairs of animals. The flood came, destroying everything except those on the ark. Nuh’s disbelieving son also drowned despite Nuh’s attempts to save him. The ark eventually came to rest on Mount Judi, and the flood ended.

“And it was said, ‘O earth, swallow your water, and O sky, withhold [your rain].’ And the water subsided, and the matter was accomplished, and the ship came to rest on the [mountain of] Judi.”

(Qur’an 11:44)

The Qur’an further says:

“We saved him and the occupants of the Ark and made it a lesson for the worlds.”

(Qur’an 29:15)

Lessons from the Life of Nuh (AS)

1. Patience and Perseverance: Prophet Nuh (AS) spent 950 years calling his people to the truth, even though they largely rejected him. His story teaches us the value of patience and the importance of continuing to spread the truth, no matter how tough the situation.

2. The Importance of Faith: Prophet Nuh (AS)never doubted Allah’s wisdom, even when building the ark seemed pointless to others. His faith in Allah’s plan serves as a powerful example for all believers.

3. Obedience to Allah: Building the ark was a test of Nuh’s (AS) obedience. Although people found it foolish, he obeyed Allah without hesitation. This shows us the importance of following Allah’s commands, even when they seem difficult.

4. The Consequences of Disbelief: The story of the flood is a reminder of the serious consequences of rejecting Allah’s message. Even Nuh’s son and wife, who did not believe, were destroyed because of their arrogance and disbelief.

Nuh (AS) is one of the five greatest prophets in Islam, known as the Ulul Azm (prophets of determination). His mission laid the foundation for future prophets, including Prophet Muhammad (PBUH). The core message of Nuh (AS)—the worship of one God—was carried forward by all prophets, reaching its final form with the message of Islam brought by Prophet Muhammad (PBUH).
