Hadith for Dua Before and After Drinking Water

Ibn ’Abbas (May Allah be pleased with them) reported:

The Messenger of Allah (ﷺ) said, “Do not drink in one gulp like a camel, but in two or three (gulps). Mention the Name of Allah (i.e., say Bismillah) when you start drinking and praise Him (i.e., say Al-hamdu lillah) after you have finished (drinking).”

Why Does Reciting Dua Before and After Drinking Water Matter?

The Prophet Muhammad (peace be upon him) taught us to recite Dua before and after big tasks and for small, everyday activities like drinking water. It reminds us to be thankful for the blessings of Allah and to remember that clean water is a gift from Him. When we say a dua before drinking water, we show our gratitude to Allah for providing us with something as vital as water.

Benefits of Reciting These Dua

1. Nourishment for the Spirit: Drinking water with the remembrance of Allah helps nourish the soul, not just quenching physical thirst.

2. Reminder of Gratitude: Saying the dua before and after drinking water reminds us to be thankful for the blessings Allah has given us.

3. Awareness of Privileges: Reciting the Dua makes us aware of the privilege of having access to clean water, something many people in the world lack.

4. Mindfulness in Daily Actions: Reciting the dua before drinking water and after transforms a simple act into a mindful practice, connecting us with Allah in our everyday routine.

5. Acknowledging Allah’s Blessings: By saying the Duas, we show that we do not take Allah’s blessings for granted, recognizing the importance of clean water.

6. Encouraging Gratitude for Every Blessing: Drinking water with dua serves as a reminder to appreciate the countless blessings Allah gives us every day.

Conclusion

Drinking water with a dua is more than just a habit in Islam. It’s a way to connect with Allah and recognize His blessings. Saying Bismillah before drinking and Alhamdulillah after reminds us that we depend on Allah for everything. By making this a daily practice, we can strengthen our relationship with Allah and stay thankful for the gift of water.
