ذَهَبَ الظَّمَأُ وَابْتَلَّتِ الْعُرُوقُ وَثَبَتَ الأَجْرُ إِنْ شَاءَ اللَّهُ

Dhahaba al-zama’ wa abtalat al-‘urooq wa thabata al-ajr in sha Allah

“The thirst is gone, the veins are refreshed, and the reward is assured, if Allah wills.”

Hadith:

This Sunnah dua for fasting Dhahaba al-zama’ wa abtalat al-‘urooq is attributed to the Prophet Muhammad (PBUH) and was passed down by companions like Umar ibn al-Khattab. The hadith (2357)is found in collections such as Abu Dawud and was later authenticated by scholars like al-Daraqutni and Ibn Hajar.

Umar reported that the Prophet Muhammad (peace be upon him) used to say this when breaking his fast, including when he ate dates.

This dua is said right after breaking the fast (iftar), either during Ramadan or any other time of fasting.

Benefits of Dhahaba al-zama Dua

1. It thanks Allah for helping us fast and break it.

2. It keeps us connected to Allah, remembering His help throughout the fast.

3. We ask Allah to reward our fasting effort.

4. The dua reminds us that our true reward comes from Allah and the Hereafter.

When to Recite: Sunnah dua for fasting

It would be best to recite this dua right after breaking your fast with the first sip of water or the first bite of food. It follows the tradition (Sunnah) of Prophet Muhammad (PBUH) and can be recited during Ramadan or voluntary fasts.

Additionally 

This dua is from a hadith of Prophet Muhammad (PBUH).

You can also make personal duas before breaking your fast, as that is a time when duas are more likely to be accepted.

Dua for Breaking Fast with a Group of People

When breaking your fast with others, you can recite this beautiful dua:

Arabic:
أفطر عندكم الصائمون، وأكل طعامكم الأبرار، وصلت عليكم الملائكة
Transliteration:
Aftara ‘indakum as-saa’imoon, wa akala ta’aamakum al-abraar, wa sallat ‘alaikum al-malaa’ikah.
Translation:
“May the fasting people break their fast at your place, may the pious eat from your food, and may the angels pray for you.”

Dua for Someone Who Provides You Iftar

Arabic:
أَفْطَرَ عِنْدَكُمُ الصَّائِمُونَ وَأَكَلَ طَعَامَكُمُ الأَبْرَارُ وَصَلَّتْ عَلَيْكُمُ الْمَلاَئِكَةُ
Transliteration:
Aftara ‘indakumus-saa’imoon, wa akala ta’aamakumul-abraar, wa sallat ‘alaikumul-malaa’ikah.
Translation:
“May the fasting people break their fast with you, may the pious eat your food, and may the angels pray for blessings on you.”
