رَبِّ اِنِّىۡ لِمَاۤ اَنۡزَلۡتَ اِلَىَّ مِنۡ خَيۡرٍ فَقِيۡرٌ

Istikhara for Marriage

When seeking guidance from Allah regarding choosing a spouse, follow the steps below to perform Istikhara:

1. Perform Two Rak’ahs of Nafl Prayer:

After ablution, offer two voluntary units of prayer. There is no specific Surah to recite, so you can choose any after Surah Al-Fatiha.

2. Recite the Istikhara Du’a:

After finishing the prayer, recite the following du’a:

“Allahumma inni astakheeruka bi’ilmik, wa’astaqdiruka biqudratik, wa as’aluka min fadhlikal ‘azeem, fa innaka taqdiru wa la aqdir, wa ta’lamu wa la a’lam, wa anta ‘allaamul ghuyoob. Allahumma in kunta ta’lamu anna haadha al-amra (mention your concern here, like ‘this marriage proposal’) khayrun li fi deeni wa ma’aashi wa ‘aaqibatu amri, faqdurhu li wa yassirhu li thumma baarik li fihi. Wa in kunta ta’lamu anna haadha al-amra sharrun li fi deeni wa ma’aashi wa ’aaqibatu amri, fasrifhu ’anni wasrifni ’anhu, waqdur li al-khayr haythu kaana thumma ardhini bihi.”

Translation:

“O Allah, I seek Your guidance by virtue of Your knowledge, and I seek ability by virtue of Your power, and I ask You of Your great bounty. You have power, I have none. And You know, I know not. You are the Knower of hidden things. O Allah, if You know that this matter (mention it here) is good for me in my religion and in my life and for my welfare in the life to come, then ordain it for me and make it easy for me, and bless me in it. And if You know that this matter is bad for me in my religion and in my life and for my welfare in the life to come, then distance it from me, and distance me from it, and ordain for me what is good wherever it may be, and help me to be content with it.”

3. Trust in the Outcome:

After performing Istikhara, place your trust in Allah’s guidance. You might feel clarity or peace in your decision. While some believe dreams may offer guidance, it is not a requirement. The key is to remain patient and trust in Allah’s plan.

What to Look for in a Spouse in Islam?

In Islam, the Prophet Muhammad (PBUH) advised to look for four things in a spouse: wealth, lineage, beauty, and religious commitment, but emphasized that piety and good character should take precedence.
