Dua for Protection from Forgetfulness and Memory
Dua for Protection from Forgetfulness and Memory
Dua for Memory:
رَبِّ زِدْنِي عِلْمًا
“Rabbi zidni ‘ilma.”
Translation: “My Lord, increase me in knowledge.”
(Quran 20:114)
A common supplication (dua) for protection from forgetfulness, as derived from the teachings of the Prophet Muhammad (PBUH), is as follows:
اللَّهُمَّ إِنِّي أَعُوذُ بِكَ مِنَ الهَمِّ وَالحَزَنِ، وَالعَجْزِ وَالكَسَلِ، وَالبُخْلِ وَالجُبْنِ، وَضَلَعِ الدَّيْنِ، وَغَلَبَةِ الرِّجَالِ
“Allahumma inni auzu bika minal-hammi wal-ḥazani, wal-‘ajzi wal-kasali, wal-bukhli wal-jubni, wa dal’i ad-dayni wa ghalabati ar-rijāl.”
Translation:
“O Allah, I seek refuge in You from anxiety and sorrow, weakness and laziness, miserliness and cowardice, the burden of debts, and from being overpowered by men (i.e., others).”
While this dua does not specifically mention forgetfulness, it addresses the emotional and mental burdens that can lead to forgetfulness, helping to foster mental clarity and strength, إن شاء الله (InshaAllah).
A specific dua for protection from forgetfulness:
اللَّهُمَّ اجْعَلْ نُورًا فِي قَلْبِي، وَنُورًا فِي سَمْعِي، وَنُورًا فِي بَصَرِي
“Allahumma ij‘al nūran fī qalbī, wa nūran fī sam‘ī, wa nūran fī basarī.”
Translation: “O Allah, place light in my heart, light in my hearing, and light in my sight.”
This dua asks Allah to illuminate the mind and senses, which can protect against forgetfulness by fostering clarity and focus.
Additional Dua for Protection from Forgetfulness and for Memory

“Allahumma inni a‘udhu bika minal-hammi wal-ḥazani, wal-‘ajzi wal-kasali, wal-bukhli wal-jubni, wa ghalabati ad-dayni wa qahri ar-rijāl.
Translation:
“O Allah, I seek refuge in You from anxiety and grief, from weakness and laziness, from miserliness and cowardice, and from being overwhelmed by debt and overpowered by men.”

Ways to Strengthen Memory and Combat Forgetfulness:
1. Avoid sin: Sin can negatively affect memory and the ability to retain knowledge. Keeping away from sinful actions helps keep the mind clear for learning.
2. Frequent remembrance of Allah (Dhikr): Engaging in Dhikr keeps the mind sharp and focused.
3. Eating in moderation: Overeating can lead to laziness, excessive sleep, and dulling of the senses. Moderation keeps the body and mind active.
4. Beneficial foods: Honey and raisins are recommended for improving memory, while consuming too much acidic food can lead to sluggishness.
5. Chewing gum resin (Mastagi): It is said to energize the heart and reduce forgetfulness.
6. Cupping (Hijama): Cupping therapy on the head is believed to improve memory.
7. Guilt from sin: Guilt and anxiety stemming from sin can distract a person from beneficial activities, such as seeking knowledge. Seeking forgiveness through Istighfar can cleanse the heart and mind.
8. Maintain balance: A spiritually and physically balanced lifestyle is essential for keeping the heart and mind clean, leading to an improvement in memory.
