Dua for Protection of the Heart (Qalb)

Dua for Protection of the Heart (Qalb)

In Arabic, Qalb (قلب) means “heart,” but in Islam, it signifies much more than the physical organ. It represents the spiritual and emotional core of a person—the source of thoughts, intentions, feelings, and faith. The state of one’s Qalb mirrors their relationship with Allah. Dua for Protection of the Heart (Qalb) is essential in safeguarding this spiritual and emotional center, seeking Allah’s guidance to maintain a pure and sincere heart, free from negative influences.

يَا مُقَلِّبَ الْقُلُوبِ ثَبِّتْ قَلْبِى عَلَى دِينِكَ

Yaa Muqallibal Quloob Thabbit Qalbee ‘alaa Deenik.

Translation: “Oh turner of the hearts (Allah, the Most High), keep our hearts firm on Your religion.”

Shahr bin Hawshab said:

I said to Umm Salamah: ‘O Mother of the Believers! What was the supplication that the Messenger of Allah (ﷺ) said most frequently when he was with you?” She said: ‘The supplication he said most frequently was: “O Changer of the hearts, make my heart firm upon Your religion (Yā Muqallibal-qulūb, thabbit qalbī alā dīnik).” She said: ‘So I said: “O Messenger of Allah, why do you supplicate so frequently: ‘O Changer of the hearts, make my heart firm upon Your religion.’ He said: ‘O Umm Salamah! Verily, there is no human being except that his heart is between Two Fingers of the Fingers of Allah, so whomsoever He wills He makes steadfast, and whomever He wills He causes to deviate.’” (Jami at-Tirmidhi 3522)

This is the Prophet’s (SAW) most repeated dua.

Dua for Purifying the Heart:

اللَّهُمَّ اغفِر ذَنبِي، وَطَهِّرْ قَلْبِي، وَحَصِّن فَرجِي

Allahummagh fir dhambi wa tahhir qalbi wa hassin farji.

Translation: “O Allah! Forgive my sin, purify my heart, and safeguard my chastity.”

Dua for Protection:

Allahumma inni a’udhu bika minal-‘ajzi wal-kasali, wal jubni wal-bukhli wal-harami wa ‘adhabil-qabri.

Translation: “O Allah! Verily, I seek refuge in You from inability, laziness, cowardice, stinginess, old age/senility, and the punishment of the grave. O Allah! Grant my soul its piety and purify it, for You are the Best Purifier of it. You are its Protector and its Guardian. O Allah! I seek refuge in You from the knowledge that does not benefit, from a heart that does not fear You, from a soul that is never satisfied, and from a supplication that is not answered.”

The Qur’an and Hadith remind us of the importance of a clean heart:

Qur’an 26:88-89: “On the Day when neither wealth nor children will benefit, except for the one who comes to Allah with a pure heart.”

Hadith:

The Prophet Muhammad (peace be upon him) said, “There is a piece of flesh in the body if it becomes good (reformed) the whole body becomes good but if it gets spoilt the whole body gets spoilt and that is the heart.”  Sahih al-Bukhari 52.

Zaid b. Alqam reported: I am not going to say anything but only that which Allah’s Messenger (peace be upon him) used to say. He used to supplicate: “O Allah, I seek refuge in You from incapacity, laziness, cowardice, miserliness, decrepitude, and from torment of the grave. O Allah, grant my soul the sense of righteousness and purify it, for You are the Best Purifier thereof. You are its Protector and Guardian. O Allah, I seek refuge in You from knowledge which does not benefit, from a heart that does not fear (Allah), from a soul that does not feel contented, and from a supplication that is not responded to.” (Sahih Muslim 2722)

How to Protect Our Qalb in Islam:

1. Remembering Allah (Dhikr): Constantly remembering Allah by reciting His names, praying, and reading the Qur’an keeps the heart connected and pure.

2. Avoiding Sin: Sin hardens the heart and distances one from Allah. Seeking forgiveness and repenting softens the heart.

3. Sincerity (Ikhlas): Doing everything with pure intentions for Allah’s sake protects the heart from hypocrisy and arrogance.

4. Compassion and Kindness: Treating others with fairness and mercy helps purify the heart, as Islam encourages kindness to everyone.

5. Mindfulness of Thoughts and Desires: Guarding our minds from harmful influences such as gossip helps maintain a healthy and pure heart.
