Dua for Stability in Religion (Istiqamah)

يَا مُقَلِّبَ الْقُلُوبِ ثَبِّتْ قَلْبِى عَلَى دِينِكَ

Yaa Muqallibal Quloob Thabbit Qalbee ‘alaa Deenik.

“Oh turner of the hearts (Allah, the Most High), keep our hearts firm on Your religion.”

اَللَّهُمَّ مُصَرِّفَ الْقُلُوبِ صَرِّفْ قُلُوبَنَا عَلَى طَاعَتِك

Allaahumma musarrifal-qulubi, sarrif qulubana ‘ala ta’atik

“O Allah! Controller of the hearts, direct our hearts to Your obedience.”

About Istiqamah in the Qur’an

1. Surah Al-Fussilat (41:30):

“Indeed, those who have said, ‘Our Lord is Allah’ and then remained steadfast—angels will descend upon them, [saying], ‘Do not fear and do not grieve but receive good tidings of Paradise, which you were promised.’”

2. Surah Al-Ahqaf (46:13):

“Indeed, those who have said, ‘Our Lord is Allah’ and then remained steadfast—there will be no fear concerning them, nor will they grieve.”

3. Surah Hud (11:112):

“So remain steadfast as you have been commanded, [you] and those who have turned back with you [to Allah], and do not transgress. Indeed, He is Seeing of what you do.”

These verses emphasize that those who stay firm in their belief in Allah and follow His commands are promised reward and protection from fear and grief.

Hadith Reference About Istiqamah:

Abdullah b. Amr b. al-‘As reported that he heard Allah’s Messenger (ﷺ) saying:

“Verily, the hearts of all the sons of Adam are between the two fingers out of the fingers of the Compassionate Lord as one heart. He turns that to any direction He likes.” Then Allah’s Messenger (ﷺ) said:

“O Allah, the Turner of the hearts, turn our hearts to Your obedience.”

(Sahih Muslim 2655)

When to Recite These Duas:

• It is beneficial to recite the dua for istiqamah regularly, particularly after prayers (salah).

• When faced with trials or moments of weakness in faith, reciting this dua can help reinforce one’s commitment to staying on the right path.

• It is also good to recite in the morning or before starting any task that requires determination.

How to stay istiqamah?

Staying istiqamah (steadfastness) in Islam requires continuous effort and dedication. Here are some key points on how to maintain istiqamah:

1. Be Clear of Your Final Destination

  • Keep the Hereafter (Akhirah) as your ultimate goal. Reminding yourself that this world is temporary and the real reward lies in the Hereafter will help you stay focused and avoid distractions.

Tip: Regularly reflect on the rewards and consequences of your deeds, and remember that your actions in this life impact your final destination.

2. Make Continuous Efforts (Mujahadah)

  • Istiqamah requires ongoing effort and struggle (mujahadah). It’s about overcoming laziness, temptations, and worldly distractions. Effort and consistency are key.

Tip: Set small, achievable goals in your worship, character, and daily routines, and work on them consistently.

3. Purify Your Intention (Niyyah)

  • Always check and renew your intention. Make sure your efforts to stay steadfast are for the sake of Allah alone, not for worldly gain or praise. Purifying your intention strengthens your sincerity (ikhlas).

Tip: Before any action, pause and ask yourself if you’re doing it solely to please Allah.

4. Be in the Company of Good People (Solihin)

  1. Surround yourself with righteous people who remind you of Allah and encourage you to stay on the right path. Good company provides motivation, accountability, and a positive environment for growth.

Tip: Attend Islamic gatherings, lectures, or join a study circle to stay connected with people who inspire you.

5. Strive for Spiritual and Personal Growth

  • Constantly work on improving your character, knowledge, and spirituality. Istiqamah is about gradual growth and consistently improving in your faith and good deeds.

Tip: Regularly seek forgiveness, make dua for steadfastness, and ask Allah for guidance and strength in your journey.

Staying istiqamah is a journey that requires both internal and external efforts, and through reliance on Allah and consistent striving, it becomes achievable.
