What is Kalima?

The Kalima (or Kalimah) in Islam refers to key declarations of faith. There are six important Kalimas that summarize essential Islamic beliefs. These are often memorized and recited by Muslims. The Six Kalimas in Islam can be summarized as:

1. Tayyibah – Declaration

2. Shahada – Testimony

3. Tamjeed – Glorification

4. Tawheed – Oneness

5. Astaghfar – Repentance

6. Radd-e-Kufr – Rejection (of disbelief)

1. Sahih Muslim 2691

Abu Huraira reported Allah’s Messenger (ﷺ) said:

• “He who uttered these words: ‘There is no god but Allah, the One, having no partner with Him. Sovereignty belongs to Him and all the praise is due to Him, and He is Potent over everything’ one hundred times every day will have the reward of emancipating ten slaves, hundred virtues recorded, hundred sins erased, safeguarded from Satan, and none will exceed him in doing good deeds except someone who does more.”

2. Sunan Abi Dawud 5077

Narrated AbuAyyash:

• The Prophet (ﷺ) said: “If anyone says in the morning: ‘There is no god but Allah alone, Who has no partner; to Him belong dominions, to Him praise is due, and He is Omnipotent,’ he will have the reward of setting free a slave from the descendants of Isma’il, ten good deeds will be recorded, ten evil deeds removed, and he will be guarded from the Devil until evening.”

3. Jami` at-Tirmidhi 3585

Amr bin Shu`aib narrated from his father, from his grandfather:

• The Prophet (ﷺ) said: “The best of supplication is the supplication of the Day of `Arafah. And the best of what I and the Prophets before me have said is: ‘None has the right to be worshipped but Allah, Alone, without partner, to Him belongs all that exists, and to Him belongs the Praise, and He is powerful over all things.’”
