Iftari Ki Dua: Dhahaba al-zama Meaning,and Benefits

Iftari Ki Dua is a special prayer that Muslims recite at the time of breaking their fast during Ramadan. Fasting (sawm) is one of the five pillars of Islam, and breaking the fast with dua is a way of showing gratitude to Allah for giving the strength to complete the fast.

Iftari Ki Dua-Hadith

Marwan ibn Salim al-Muqaffa’ said:

I saw Ibn Umar holding his beard with his hand and cutting what exceeded the handful of it. He (Ibn Umar) said that the Prophet (ﷺ) said when he broke his fast: Thirst has gone, the arteries are moist, and the reward is sure, if Allah wills.

(Sunan Abi Dawud 2357)

Meaning and Significance:

“Dhahaba al-zama’”: “The thirst is gone.” It signifies that the fasting person’s physical need for water has been met after enduring thirst throughout the day.

“Wa abtalat al-‘urooq”: “The veins are moistened,” indicating that the body is being replenished and refreshed with food and drink.

“Wa thabata al-ajr in sha Allah”: “And the reward is confirmed if Allah wills.” This part of the dua reflects the hope that Allah has accepted the fast and that the person will receive the reward for their patience and obedience.
