Prophet Idris (عَلَيْهِ ٱلسَّلَامُ), known as Enoch in the Bible, is one of the earliest prophets in Islam. He is believed to be the second or third prophet sent by Allah. Prophet Idris (AS) was a wise and patient man, known for his deep faith in Allah. Although Islamic texts provide limited details about his life, his legacy as a man of profound knowledge and moral integrity continues to inspire Muslims.

Qur’anic References to Prophet Idris (AS)

Prophet Idris (AS) is mentioned in two significant passages of the Qur’an, emphasizing his character and divine elevation:

  1. Surah Al-Anbiya (21:85):
    “And [mention] Ishmael, Idrees, and Dhul-Kifl; all were of the patient.”
  2. Surah Maryam (19:56-57):
    “And mention in the Book, Idris. Indeed, he was a man of truth and a prophet. And We raised him to a high station.”

These verses show that Prophet Idris (AS) was a man of truth, patience, and high moral character. Allah also elevated him to a high status, both spiritually and physically.

Early Life and Prophethood

Idris (عَلَيْهِ ٱلسَّلَامُ) was born shortly after the time of Prophet Adam (عَلَيْهِ ٱلسَّلَامُ). Some say he was a descendant of Adam’s son, Seth (Sheeth). He lived at a time when people were starting to turn away from Allah’s guidance, and many began to commit sins. Allah chose Idris as a prophet to guide his people back to the right path.

  • Sewing Skills: Idris introduced sewing clothes from fabric, replacing the use of animal skins.
  • Invention of Writing: Believed to be the first person to use a pen for writing.

Jihad Against Corruption

During the time of Prophet Idris (AS), corruption and evil had spread widely among the people. Following Allah’s command, Prophet Idris (AS) teachings jihad (a struggle or fight for a righteous cause) against the followers of Qabil (Cain), who had turned away from the path of Allah. He led an army to fight against the wrongdoers and emerged victorious, earning Allah’s pleasure.

Ascension to the Heavens

One of the most remarkable events in Prophet Idris (AS)’s life was his ascension to the heavens. It is said that Idris wished for more time to perform good deeds. With the help of an angel, he was taken to the heavens. Upon reaching the fourth heaven, his soul was taken by the Angel of Death, as ordained by Allah. Prophet Muhammad (ﷺ) later encountered Idris during the Night Journey (Isra and Mi’raj).

Prophet Idris (AS) imparted timeless wisdom, including:

  • “Happy is he who looks at his own deeds and appoints them as pleaders to his Lord.”
  • “None can show better gratitude for Allah’s favors than he who shares them with others.”
  • “Do not envy people for what they have, as they will only enjoy it for a short while.”
  • “He who indulges in excess will not benefit from it.”
  • “The real joy of life is to have wisdom.”
