Safar ki dua in English and Arabic

This hadith teaches us a series of duas(safar ki dua) to recite before riding an animal or starting a journey.

1. Preparation for Riding:

• Before mounting the animal, Ali bin Rabi’ah recited “Bismillah” (In the Name of Allah) three times.

2. Gratitude and Recognition of Allah’s Power:

• Upon mounting the animal, Ali praised Allah for His power in subjecting the animal for their use.
• He recited “Alhamdulillah” (All praise is due to Allah) and acknowledged Allah’s authority with-Safar ki dua
• “Subhan Alladhi Sakh-khara Lana Hadha Wa Ma Kunna Lahu Muqrinin. Wa Inna Ila Rabbina Lamunqalibun” (Glory is to Him Who has subjected this to us, and surely, to our Lord are we returning).

سُبْحَانَ الَّذِي سَخَّرَ لَنَا هَذَا وَمَا كُنَّا لَهُ مُقْرِنِينَ. وَإِنَّا إِلَى رَبِّنَا لَمُنْقَلِبُونَ

3. Further Gratitude and Praise:

• Ali repeated “Alhamdulillah” (All praise is due to Allah) three times and “Allahu Akbar” (Allah is the Greatest) three times.

4. Seeking Forgiveness:

• He then sought forgiveness from Allah, admitting his wrongdoing and asking for forgiveness because only Allah forgives sins.
• The supplication recited was “Subhanaka Inni Qad Zalamtu Nafsi Faghfirli Fa-Innahu La Yaghfirudh-Dhunuba Illa Ant” (Glory is to You, indeed I have wronged myself, so forgive me, for indeed none forgives sins except You).

سُبْحَانَكَ إِنِّي قَدْ ظَلَمْتُ نَفْسِي فَاغْفِرْ لِي فَإِنَّهُ لَا يَغْفِرُ الذُّنُوبَ إِلَّا أَنْتَ

5. Messenger’s Confirmation:

• Prophetic Advice: The Messenger of Allah (ﷺ) said, “Were people to know what I know about the dangers of travelling alone, no rider would travel alone at night.” In another narration, he said, “A single rider is (accompanied by) Satan and two riders are (accompanied by) two Satans. Three riders form a group.”
• Explanation: This advice was particularly relevant during the Prophet’s time when traveling alone, especially at night, was much more dangerous. Today, while traveling at night might be safer, you are still not as alert as you would be during the day. Traveling with a group reduces the risk of mistakes or being taken advantage of.

When Ascending to Heights (Going on a Plane)

• Hadith: Ibn ‘Umar (May Allah be pleased with him) reported that whenever the Prophet (ﷺ) and his army ascended a height, they would proclaim, “Allahu Akbar (Allah is Greatest),” and when they descended, they would proclaim, “Subhan Allah (Allah is free from imperfection).”
• Modern Application: When taking off in a plane or climbing a hill, saying “Allahu Akbar” is a way to acknowledge Allah’s greatness. Similarly, saying “Subhan Allah” when descending shows gratitude and acknowledges Allah’s perfection.
