Surah Al-Adiyat, the 100th chapter of the Qur’an, has 11 verses and is located in the 30th part. It is named after “Al-Adiyat” (the swift horses) mentioned in the opening verses. This surah was revealed in Mecca, making it a “Meccan surah.” It is said that the revelation came after Prophet Muhammad (peace be upon him) sent a secret mission to the tribe of Kinanah. وَالْعَادِيَاتِ ضَبْحًاWal-’ādiyāti ḍabḥāBy the racing horses panting hard,
فَالْمُورِيَاتِ قَدْحًاFal-mūriyāti qadhāStriking sparks of fire,
فَالْمُغِيرَاتِ صُبْحًاFal-mughīrāti ṣubḥāCharging into the fray at dawn,
فَأَثَرْنَ بِهِ نَقْعًاFa’atharna bihī naq’āStirring up clouds of dust,
فَوَسَطْنَ بِهِ جَمْعًاFawasatna bihī jam’āPenetrating deep into enemy lines,
إِنَّ الْإِنسَانَ لِرَبِّهِ لَكَنُودٌInnal-insāna lirabbihī lakanūdSurely man is ungrateful to his Lord.
وَإِنَّهُ عَلَىٰ ذَٰلِكَ لَشَهِيدٌWa-innahū ‘alā dhālika lashaheedAnd he himself is a witness to that,
وَإِنَّهُ لِحُبِّ الْخَيْرِ لَشَدِيدٌWa-innahū lihubbil-khairi lashadeedAnd he is, indeed, in love with wealth intensely.
أَفَلَا يَعْلَمُ إِذَا بُعْثِرَ مَا فِي الْقُبُورِAfalā ya’lamu itha bu’thira mā fil-qubūrDoes he not know, when the contents of the graves are scattered,
وَحُصِّلَ مَا فِي الصُّدُورِWahus’sila mā fis’sudūrAnd the secrets of the hearts are laid bare,
إِنَّ رَبَّهُم بِهِمْ يَوْمَئِذٍ لَخَبِيرٌInna rabbahum bihim yawma-idhil-lakhabeerSurely their Lord is aware of them on that Day.
