Surah Al-Fajr PDF Translation and Transliteration

Surah Al-Fajr (Arabic text: الفجر) is the 89th chapter of the Qur’an. The surah titled in English means “The Dawn” and it consists of 30 verses.

The first part of this Surah discusses those who disobeyed and faced punishment. It mentions the ancient rebellious nations like ‘Ad, Thamud, and Pharaoh. The main lesson here is to avoid arrogance. People often get distracted by worldly things and see themselves as more important than they are.

Allah warns us to be cautious of falling into this trap. The next part of Al-Fajr reminds Muslims not to neglect to do good deeds. It tells us that we must intentionally seek and perform good actions to enter paradise. This is how we move up in ranks with Allah.

بِسْمِ اللَّهِ الرَّحْمَٰنِ الرَّحِيمِ	Bismillaahir Rahmaanir Raheem	In the name of Allah, the Most Gracious, the Most Merciful
وَالْفَجْرِ	Wal-Fajr	By the dawn
وَلَيَالٍ عَشْرٍ	Wa layaalin ‘ashr	And ten nights
وَالشَّفْعِ وَالْوَتْرِ	Wash shaf’i wal watr	And [by] the even and the odd
وَاللَّيْلِ إِذَا يَسْرِ	Wallaili izaa yasr	And [by] the night when it passes
هَلْ فِي ذَٰلِكَ قَسَمٌ لِّذِي حِجْرٍ	Hal fee zaalika qasamul lizee hijr	Is there [not] in that an oath for those who have intellect?
أَلَمْ تَرَ كَيْفَ فَعَلَ رَبُّكَ بِعَادٍ	Alam tara kaifa fa’ala rabbuka bi’aad	Have you not considered how your Lord dealt with ‘Aad?
إِرَمَ ذَاتِ الْعِمَادِ	Iramaa zaatil ‘imaad	[With] Iram, who had lofty pillars?
الَّتِي لَمْ يُخْلَقْ مِثْلُهَا فِي الْبِلَادِ	Allatee lam yukhlaq misluhaa fil bilaad	The likes of which had never been created in the lands?
وَثَمُودَ الَّذِينَ جَابُوا الصَّخْرَ بِالْوَادِ	Wa samoodal lazeena jaabus sakhra bil waad	And [with] Thamud, who carved out the rocks in the valley?
وَفِرْعَوْنَ ذِي الْأَوْتَادِ	Wa fir’awna zil awtaad	And Pharaoh, owner of stakes?
الَّذِينَ طَغَوْا فِي الْبِلَادِ	Allazeena taghaw fil bilaad	[Those] who transgressed in the lands
فَأَكْثَرُوا فِيهَا الْفَسَادَ	Fa aksaroo feehal fasaad	And caused much corruption therein.
فَصَبَّ عَلَيْهِمْ رَبُّكَ سَوْطَ عَذَابٍ	Fasabba ‘alaihim Rabbuka sawta ‘azaab	So your Lord poured upon them a scourge of punishment.
إِنَّ رَبَّكَ لَبِالْمِرْصَادِ	Inna Rabbaka labil mirsaad	Indeed, your Lord is in observation.
فَأَمَّا الْإِنسَانُ إِذَا مَا ابْتَلَاهُ رَبُّهُ	Fa ammal insaanu izaa mab talaahu Rabbuhoo	And as for man, when his Lord tests him…
فَأَكْرَمَهُ وَنَعَّمَهُ فَيَقُولُ رَبِّي أَكْرَمَنِ	fa akramahoo wa na’ ‘amahoo fa yaqoolu Rabbeee akraman	And favors him and says, “My Lord has honored me.”
وَأَمَّا إِذَا مَا ابْتَلَاهُ فَقَدَرَ عَلَيْهِ رِزْقَهُ	Wa ammaaa izaa mabtalaahu faqadara ‘alaihi rizqahoo	But when He tests him and restricts his provision…
فَيَقُولُ رَبِّي أَهَانَنِ	fa yaqoolu Rabbeee ahaanan	He says, “My Lord has humiliated me.”
كَلَّا ۖ بَل لَّا تُكْرِمُونَ الْيَتِيمَ	Kalla bal laa tukrimoo nal yateem	No! But you do not honor the orphan
وَلَا تَحَاضُّونَ عَلَىٰ طَعَامِ الْمِسْكِينِ	Wa laa tahaaaddoona ‘alaata’aamil miskeen	And you do not encourage one another to feed the poor.
وَتَأْكُلُونَ التُّرَاثَ أَكْلًا لَّمًّا	Wa taakuloonat turaasa aklal lammaa	And you consume inheritance, devouring [it] altogether.
وَتُحِبُّونَ الْمَالَ حُبًّا جَمًّا	Wa tuhibboonal maala hubban jammaa	And you love wealth with immense love.
كَلَّا إِذَا دُكَّتِ الْأَرْضُ دَكًّا دَكًّا	Kallaaa izaaa dukkatil ardu dakkan dakka	No! When the earth has been leveled – a levelled plain…
وَجَاءَ رَبُّكَ وَالْمَلَكُ صَفًّا صَفًّا	Wa jaaa’a Rabbuka wal malaku saffan saffaa	And your Lord comes and the angels in rows.
وَجِيءَ يَوْمَئِذٍ بِجَهَنَّمَ ۚ	Wa jeee’a yawma’izim bi jahannnam	And Hell, that Day, is brought forth…
يَوْمَئِذٍ يَتَذَكَّرُ الْإِنسَانُ وَأَنَّىٰ لَهُ الذِّكْرَىٰ	Yawma ‘iziny yatazakkarul insaanu wa annaa lahuz zikraa	On that Day, the human being will remember…
يَقُولُ يَا لَيْتَنِي قَدَّمْتُ لِحَيَاتِي	Yaqoolu yaa laitanee qaddamtu lihayaatee	He will say, “Oh, I wish I had prepared for my life.”
فَيَوْمَئِذٍ لَّا يُعَذِّبُ عَذَابَهُ أَحَدٌ	Fa Yawma izil laa yu’azzibu ’azaabahooo ahad	So on that Day, no one will punish [as] He punished.
وَلَا يُوثِقُ وَثَاقَهُ أَحَدٌ	Wa laa yoosiqu wasaaqa hooo ahad	And no one will bind [as] He binds.
يَا أَيَّتُهَا النَّفْسُ الْمُطْمَئِنَّةُ	Yaaa ayyatuhan nafsul mutma ‘innah	O tranquil soul,
ارْجِعِي إِلَىٰ رَبِّكِ رَاضِيَةً مَّرْضِيَّةً	Irji’eee ilaa Rabbiki raadiyatam mardiyyah	Return to your Lord, well pleased and pleasing [to Him].
فَادْخُلِي فِي عِبَادِي	Fadkhulee fee ’ibaadee	And enter among My servants,
وَادْخُلِي جَنَّتِي	Wadkhulee jannatee	**And enter
