Surah Al Ghaashiya (Arabic text: الغاشية) is the 88th chapter of the Qur’an. The surah, which means “The Overwhelming,” consists of 26 verses in English.

1هَلْ أَتَىٰكَ حَدِيثُ ٱلْغَـٰشِيَةِHal atāka ḥadīthu al-ghāshiyaHas the story of the overwhelming event reached you?
2وُجُوهٌۭ يَوْمَئِذٍ خَـٰشِعَةٌWujūhun yawma idhin khāshiʿaSome faces, on that Day, will be humbled,
3عَامِلَةٌۭ نَّاصِبَةٌʿĀmila tun nāsibalaboring and exhausted,
4تَصْلَىٰ نَارًا حَامِيَةًۭTaslā nāran ḥāmiyyathey will be scorched by a blazing fire,
5تُسْقَىٰ مِنْ عَيْنٍ ءَانِيَةٍۢTusqā min ʿaynin ʾāniyathey will be given to drink from a boiling spring,
6لَّيْسَ لَهُمْ طَعَامٌ إِلَّا مِن ضَرِيعٍۢLaysa lahum ṭaʿāmun illā min ḍarīʿhaving no food except for thorns,
7لَا يُسْمِنُ وَلَا يُغْنِى مِن جُوعٍۢLā yusminu walā yughni min jūʿwhich will neither nourish nor satisfy hunger.
8وُجُوهٌۭ يَوْمَئِذٍۢ نَّاعِمَةٌۭWujūhun yawma idhin nāʿimaOther faces, on that Day, will be joyful,
9لِّسَعْيِهَا رَاضِيَةٌۭLisʿyihā rāḍiyacontent with their efforts,
10فِى جَنَّةٍ عَالِيَةٍۢFī jannatin ʿāliyain a lofty garden,
11لَّا تَسْمَعُ فِيهَا لَـٰغِيَةًۭLā tasmaʿu fīhā lāghiyawhere they will hear no idle talk.
12فِيهَا عَيْنٌۭ جَارِيَةٌۭFīhā ʿaynun jārīyaIn it will be a flowing fountain,
13فِيهَا سُرُرٌۭ مَّرْفُوعَةٌۭFīhā sururun marfūʿain it will be raised couches,
14وَأَكْوَابٌۭ مَّوْضُوعَةٌۭWa akwābun mawḍūʿaand placed cups,
15وَنَمَارِقُ مَصْفُوفَةٌۭWa namāriqu maṣfūfaand arranged cushions,
16وَزَرَابِىُّ مَبْثُوثَةٌۭWa zarābīyū mabthūthaand scattered carpets.
17أَفَلَا يَنظُرُونَ إِلَى ٱلْإِبِلِ كَيْفَ خُلِقَتْAfalā yanẓurūna ilā al-ibil kayfa khuliqatDo they not look at the camels, how they are created?
18وَإِلَى ٱلسَّمَآءِ كَيْفَ رُفِعَتْWa ilā al-samā’i kayfa rufiʿatAnd at the sky, how it is raised?
19وَإِلَى ٱلْجِبَالِ كَيْفَ نُصِبَتْWa ilā al-jibāli kayfa nūṣibatAnd at the mountains, how they are set up?
20وَإِلَى ٱلْأَرْضِ كَيْفَ سُطِحَتْWa ilā al-arḍi kayfa suṭiḥatAnd at the earth, how it is spread out?
21فَذَكِّرْ إِنَّمَآ أَنتَ مُذَكِّرٌۭFadhakkir innamā anta muḏakkirSo remind, for you are only a reminder.
22لَّسْتَ عَلَيْهِم بِمُصَيْطِرٍLasta ʿalayhim bi muṣayṭirYou are not over them a controller.
23إِلَّا مَن تَوَلَّىٰ وَكَفَرَIllā man tawallā wa kafaraExcept for whoever turns away and disbelieves,
24فَيُعَذِّبُهُ ٱللَّهُ ٱلْعَذَابَ ٱلْأَكْبَرَFa yuʿadhdhibuhu Allahu al-ʿadhāba al-akbarathen Allah will punish him with the greatest punishment.
25إِنَّ إِلَيْنَآ إِيَابَهُمْInna ilaynā iyābahumIndeed, to Us is their return.
26ثُمَّ إِنَّ عَلَيْنَا حِسَابَهُمThumma inna ʿalayna ḥisābahumThen indeed, upon Us is their account.

Hadith-Surah Al Ghaashiya

It was narrated that ‘Ubaidullah bin ‘Abdullah said: “Dahhak bin Qais wrote to Nu’man bin Bashir, saying: ‘Tell us what the Messenger of Allah (ﷺ) used to recite on Friday along with Surah Al-Jumu’ah.’ He said: ‘He used to recite: “Has there come to you the narration of the overwhelming (i.e., the Day of Resurrection)?” [Al-Ghashiyah (88)]”
