Surah Al Ghaashiya Transliteration Arabic text and PDF
Surah Al Ghaashiya (Arabic text: الغاشية) is the 88th chapter of the Qur’an. The surah, which means “The Overwhelming,” consists of 26 verses in English.

1 | هَلْ أَتَىٰكَ حَدِيثُ ٱلْغَـٰشِيَةِ | Hal atāka ḥadīthu al-ghāshiya | Has the story of the overwhelming event reached you? |
2 | وُجُوهٌۭ يَوْمَئِذٍ خَـٰشِعَةٌ | Wujūhun yawma idhin khāshiʿa | Some faces, on that Day, will be humbled, |
3 | عَامِلَةٌۭ نَّاصِبَةٌ | ʿĀmila tun nāsiba | laboring and exhausted, |
4 | تَصْلَىٰ نَارًا حَامِيَةًۭ | Taslā nāran ḥāmiyya | they will be scorched by a blazing fire, |
5 | تُسْقَىٰ مِنْ عَيْنٍ ءَانِيَةٍۢ | Tusqā min ʿaynin ʾāniya | they will be given to drink from a boiling spring, |
6 | لَّيْسَ لَهُمْ طَعَامٌ إِلَّا مِن ضَرِيعٍۢ | Laysa lahum ṭaʿāmun illā min ḍarīʿ | having no food except for thorns, |
7 | لَا يُسْمِنُ وَلَا يُغْنِى مِن جُوعٍۢ | Lā yusminu walā yughni min jūʿ | which will neither nourish nor satisfy hunger. |
8 | وُجُوهٌۭ يَوْمَئِذٍۢ نَّاعِمَةٌۭ | Wujūhun yawma idhin nāʿima | Other faces, on that Day, will be joyful, |
9 | لِّسَعْيِهَا رَاضِيَةٌۭ | Lisʿyihā rāḍiya | content with their efforts, |
10 | فِى جَنَّةٍ عَالِيَةٍۢ | Fī jannatin ʿāliya | in a lofty garden, |
11 | لَّا تَسْمَعُ فِيهَا لَـٰغِيَةًۭ | Lā tasmaʿu fīhā lāghiya | where they will hear no idle talk. |
12 | فِيهَا عَيْنٌۭ جَارِيَةٌۭ | Fīhā ʿaynun jārīya | In it will be a flowing fountain, |
13 | فِيهَا سُرُرٌۭ مَّرْفُوعَةٌۭ | Fīhā sururun marfūʿa | in it will be raised couches, |
14 | وَأَكْوَابٌۭ مَّوْضُوعَةٌۭ | Wa akwābun mawḍūʿa | and placed cups, |
15 | وَنَمَارِقُ مَصْفُوفَةٌۭ | Wa namāriqu maṣfūfa | and arranged cushions, |
16 | وَزَرَابِىُّ مَبْثُوثَةٌۭ | Wa zarābīyū mabthūtha | and scattered carpets. |
17 | أَفَلَا يَنظُرُونَ إِلَى ٱلْإِبِلِ كَيْفَ خُلِقَتْ | Afalā yanẓurūna ilā al-ibil kayfa khuliqat | Do they not look at the camels, how they are created? |
18 | وَإِلَى ٱلسَّمَآءِ كَيْفَ رُفِعَتْ | Wa ilā al-samā’i kayfa rufiʿat | And at the sky, how it is raised? |
19 | وَإِلَى ٱلْجِبَالِ كَيْفَ نُصِبَتْ | Wa ilā al-jibāli kayfa nūṣibat | And at the mountains, how they are set up? |
20 | وَإِلَى ٱلْأَرْضِ كَيْفَ سُطِحَتْ | Wa ilā al-arḍi kayfa suṭiḥat | And at the earth, how it is spread out? |
21 | فَذَكِّرْ إِنَّمَآ أَنتَ مُذَكِّرٌۭ | Fadhakkir innamā anta muḏakkir | So remind, for you are only a reminder. |
22 | لَّسْتَ عَلَيْهِم بِمُصَيْطِرٍ | Lasta ʿalayhim bi muṣayṭir | You are not over them a controller. |
23 | إِلَّا مَن تَوَلَّىٰ وَكَفَرَ | Illā man tawallā wa kafara | Except for whoever turns away and disbelieves, |
24 | فَيُعَذِّبُهُ ٱللَّهُ ٱلْعَذَابَ ٱلْأَكْبَرَ | Fa yuʿadhdhibuhu Allahu al-ʿadhāba al-akbara | then Allah will punish him with the greatest punishment. |
25 | إِنَّ إِلَيْنَآ إِيَابَهُمْ | Inna ilaynā iyābahum | Indeed, to Us is their return. |
26 | ثُمَّ إِنَّ عَلَيْنَا حِسَابَهُم | Thumma inna ʿalayna ḥisābahum | Then indeed, upon Us is their account. |

Revelation
This Surah is among the early revelations at Makkah, revealed during a time when the Prophet (peace be upon him) had begun to deliver his message openly. The people of Makkah, however, were listening without much attention, carelessly and without serious thought.
Hadith-Surah Al Ghaashiya
It was narrated that ‘Ubaidullah bin ‘Abdullah said: “Dahhak bin Qais wrote to Nu’man bin Bashir, saying: ‘Tell us what the Messenger of Allah (ﷺ) used to recite on Friday along with Surah Al-Jumu’ah.’ He said: ‘He used to recite: “Has there come to you the narration of the overwhelming (i.e., the Day of Resurrection)?” [Al-Ghashiyah (88)]”
