Revelation
Surah Al-Mutaffifin was revealed in Makkah, where dishonesty in trade was common. It addressed the corrupt practices of merchants who cheated by giving less than what was due while measuring or weighing goods. This surah also serves as a reminder of the Day of Judgment, when everyone will be held accountable for their deeds.
Surah Al-Mutaffifin Tafseer in English
Verses 1-4
“Woe to those who give less [than due], who, when they take a measure from people, take in full, but if they give by measure or by weight to them, they cause loss. Do they not think that they will be resurrected for a tremendous Day?”
These verses begin with a warning to those who cheat others. Allah is condemning those who take full advantage of others but do not give back what is fair. The verses remind them that they will be held accountable on the Day of Judgment for their unfair actions.
Verses 5-8
“The Day when mankind will stand before the Lord of the worlds. No! Indeed, the record of the wicked is in sijjeen. And what can make you know what is sijjeen? It is a register inscribed.”
These verses continue by describing the Day of Judgment, where everyone will be resurrected and judged by Allah. The term “sijjeen” refers to the record of the evildoers, which is kept in a book that documents their wrongdoings.
Verses 9-12
“Woe, that Day, to the deniers, who deny the Day of Recompense. And none deny it except every sinful transgressor. When Our verses are recited to him, he says, ‘Legends of the former peoples.’”
These verses warn those who deny the existence of the Day of Judgment and mock the revelations. Such people ignore the guidance sent by Allah and live sinful lives without fear of consequences.

Verses 13-16
“No! Rather, the stain has covered their hearts of that which they were earning. No! Indeed, from their Lord, that Day, they will be partitioned. Then indeed, they will [enter and] burn in Hellfire.”
Here, Allah explains that the hearts of the sinners are covered by a stain due to their constant sins. On the Day of Judgment, they will be separated from Allah’s mercy and will be punished in Hellfire.
Verses 17-20
“Then it will be said [to them], ‘This is what you used to deny.’ No! Indeed, the record of the righteous is in ’illiyyun. And what can make you know what is ’illiyyun? It is a register inscribed.”
The contrast is made between the wicked and the righteous. While the wrongdoers are in sijjeen, the righteous have their deeds recorded in ’illiyyun, which signifies a high, honorable place. This is a book that holds the good deeds of the believers.
Verses 21-24
“Which is witnessed by those brought near [to Allah]. Indeed, the righteous will be in pleasure on adorned couches, observing. You will recognize in their faces the radiance of pleasure.”
These verses describe the reward of the righteous. They will be in a state of bliss and comfort, enjoying the pleasures of Paradise. Their faces will reflect happiness and contentment as they witness the beauty and blessings that Allah has promised them.
Verses 25-28
“They will be given to drink [pure] wine [which was] sealed. The last of it is musk. So for this let the competitors compete. And its mixture is of Tasneem, a spring from which those near [to Allah] drink.”
The righteous in Paradise will be given a special drink, pure and sealed with musk, mixed with the water of Tasneem, a spring reserved for the people close to Allah.
Verses 29-32
“Indeed, those who committed crimes used to laugh at those who believed. And when they passed by them, they would exchange derisive glances. And when they returned to their people, they would return jesting.”
These verses describe how the sinners mocked the believers in the worldly life. They made fun of the believers and took pleasure in their suffering, considering themselves superior.
Verses 33-36
“But they had not been sent as guardians over them. So Today those who believed are laughing at the disbelievers, on adorned couches, observing. Have the disbelievers [not] been rewarded [this Day] for what they used to do?”
The surah concludes by reversing the situation. On the Day of Judgment, it is the believers who will laugh at the disbelievers as they enjoy the pleasures of Paradise. The disbelievers are finally facing the consequences of their mockery and denial.
